Google Map Envelopes

What an awesome concept! I want these now! :) They are attractive and so useful! You know those packages that get delivered to the incorrect address, with one of these, you could potentially zoom in to the street view, or city view and show the correct address in map form to the delivery person. Awesome!

FedEx, UPS & USPS Dimensional Weight Explained

Ahh, my favorite subject, yours to I presume? Dimensional weight, when you get charged the 30lb rate for a 2lb package, welcome to Dimensional weight shipping. A 2lb package ships from Florida to California costs $7.00, a 30lb package $27.92. A big difference, huh? The package in question is a 2lb product, packaged in a box measuring 22"x22"x12", due to it's "large" size, it calculates to a dimensional weight of 30lbs. Now lets say if we packed this product into a slightly smaller box, say a 21"x20"x12" box, we would be charged the 2lb rate, not the 30lb rate, as this box size is the largest we can send without incurring the dimensional weight charge. So by shaving about 3" in box, we saved $20.92. So be sure to pay attention to box size when shipping!

Here is a great article better explaing the Who, What & Why of Dimensional Weight Chipping used by FedEx, UPS, and USPS.

Are UPS tracking updates accurate?

That is the question I found myself asking when reading an article this morning.

Here is a small exerpt frm the article:

"UPS's tracking log had my goods breaking the laws of physics. It showed an "arrival scan" in Newark, NJ, at 6:27 a.m. But three minutes later, at 6:30 a.m., my box was listed as being in Louisville, KY. The two cities are 642 miles apart."

Did you know, Packages Delivered Late = Refund $$$$ ?

What, you didnt know?! It is true! At least it is for UPS, and FedEx. This goes for Ground, and Air packages. There are a few exceptions to this rule. Don't look for refunds for late packages a couple of weeks around the Christmas holidays and in inclement weather you would not get reimbersed for late packages. There are companies that will tell you which packages are late and even file the refund request for you, but often times they want 50% of the refund. Here is how one company avoids paying the middleman.

USPS Five-Day Delivery: How will It Affect You?

Will a 5 day delivery week affect you or your business?

From the USPS Five Day Delivery website:

"The Postal Service plans to implement five-day delivery in fiscal year 2011. Implementation is contingent on Congress not enacting legislation to prevent that change in service. In addition, the Postal Service must ask the Postal Regulatory Commission to review its plans and issue a non-binding advisory opinion."

UPS Announces Smart Pickup - Saves Time, Saves Money

I just read that UPS has announced a new service, Smart Pickup. Let me first say that we ship 99% of our packages via FedEx Ground, but we do keep our UPS Daily Pick up account for customers that want to ship an order using their own UPS account#. So everyday UPS comes by to see if we have any packages for them. Most days we do not, like I said before, we ship 99% of our packages via FedEx Ground. We get billed $20.00 a week for this service, even if we do not ship a single package with them.

This new services does a couple of things. It saves us money for one, and still allows us to still offer UPS shipping. instead of $20.00 a week, the charge will be $10.00 a week ($40.00 a month), Excellent! Also, it saves the driver from having to drive to our business, get out of his truck, walk into the warehouse and return to his truck empty handed. Saving UPS, in fuel and payroll. It sounds great, I guess, unless you have a 1:00 pickup, then any labels printed after 1:00pm, would not get picked up the same day? Then it might not be worth the $10.00 savings a week, $40.00 a month. I guess for us it will depend on our new pickup time.

Remember the saying, $1.00 saved is $1.00 earned? Well, make that $40.00 saved is $40.00 earned, a month that is, or $480 over a years time!

We plan on trying this service and will report back our finding. Please, if you use this service, let us know how it works for you!

See program details here:

Anatomy of a Fake Phishing Email, Don't get Scammed!

I don't know about you, but we get phishing emails every day. Some from eBay, some from PayPal, some from Banks we do not even do business with. I have to admit, they are getting better and better as the years go by. Here is a great article that dissects a phishing email and I hope is a help to you.

From the article:

"We all get phishing emails and it is important to recognize and avoid getting trapped by these fake phishing emails and not disclose your personal information, bank accounts, credit cards details to unknown fraud persons, who harvest private information via fake websites, links and emails."

Shipping: Dimensional Weight Errors Can Cost Big Bucks

Here is a great article on how the size of a package can cost you a pretty big chunk of change, so be carful when shipping large packages. In our  industry, the packaging industry, a lot of our products are light but bulky and we run into this issue often. Sometimes it cannot be avoided, but it is better to know this upfront, then get hit later on with additional fees. The author of the below article also offers a great free excel spreadsheet to help calculate box sizes and if they will be hit with Dimensional fees, and what those costs will be.:

From the article:

"There are mistakes that can cost you when calculating shipping and handling fees. A big one is missing a UPS, FedEx or U.S. Postal Service DIM (dimensional) or oversize rule for large or lightweight packages.

The term “DIM” refers to package shipping density, meaning the weight of the package in pounds per cubic foot. If your package is big enough, or if the weight is small enough, the DIM rules can make your shipping costs dramatically increase.

For example, to ship a carton as small as 18” x 18” x 18”, UPS and FedEx DIM rules substitute 31 pounds as the minimum billing weight, even if the actual weight is much less. Or, for a carton as small as 27” x 27” x 27”, UPS and FedEx will add a $45 oversize surcharge on top of the DIM weight"
